Q. What type of oil should I use?
A. Bauer recommends using the
OIL-0001 petroleum based oil for the first 25-50 hours for break-in.
After that you should change to OIL-0024 synthetic oil. Remember to
follow the instructions in your manual when changing types of oil.
Q. How often should I run my compressor?
A. We recommend running the compressor
at least once a week, for 20-30 minutes. This allows the ACD (Auto
Condensate Drain) to operate through at least one cycle and the
oil is cycled through the compressor lubricating and protecting
all moving parts. Remember always check the oil level before starting.
If your storage is topped off, just open a fill whip and let the
compressor run continuous. The compressor should not cycle on/off
more than 4 times per hour.
Q. Why do some of my gauges have
different readings?
A. Gauges are allowed a certain amount
of variation, it is usually most noticeable on storage systems.
On a four cylinder storage system the gauges may read: 4900, 5000,
5100, and 5000. This is normal because of the tolerances allowed
from the gauge manufacturer. It is best to take the average reading
across all gauges. If a gauge shows a false reading, leaks fluid
from the face or doesn't work properly give us a call to order a
new gauge.
Q. How often should I service my
compressor?
A. It depends on the usage. Compressors
that only get used a few times a month for short periods of time
should be serviced yearly. Compressors that are used frequently
with longer running times or in harsh environments may need semi
annual or quarterly service. Bauer San Francisco offers annual and
semiannual service contracts to our customers in California and
Nevada. Minimum service should be annual oil change and filter replacement.
From Bauer owners wanting to perform their own services we offer
training classes at our location. Please contact us for schedules
and prices.
Q. Why do I need a Block Number
for parts and service?
A. The block number is the number
stamped on the compressor block, usually found near the oil fill
cap. This number is important because there can be several modifications
within the same model number and there is the possibility of the
block being replaced sometime in the past. Ordering parts based
on the data plate or model number may cause the wrong parts to be
sent. Before calling for parts or service please have the model
number and block number for us.
Q. Why can't I wait until my Securus
light turns red to change filters?
A. On compressors that are used infrequently
the light may not turn red for years. The filters should be replaced
yearly even if the light doesn't turn yellow or red.
Q. What if my Securus light is steady
red?
A. A steady red light indicates that
the cable going to the filter housing may be unplugged. Check the
connection. If it is still red check the contact on the inside of
the filter housing on top of the Securus filter, make sure that
they are clean. If it is still steady try changing Securus filters,
sometimes the filters are damaged in shipping (usually by a hard
drop). If it is still red the Securus box is probably bad, give
us a call to order a new one.
Q. I can't find my operating manual
how do I get a new one?
A. Give us a call with the model
number, block number and serial number and we can send one to you.
Typically they cost around $35.00 depending on the model. Some manuals
are also available on CD-ROM. Some models have a workshop manual
available for instruction on block repairs.
Q. Why does my compressor "knock"
when it starts up.
A. The knocking sound you hear is
the free floating piston on the last stage. This is Bauer design
that has been successful for years. The noise goes away as the prior
stage supplies pressure to the final stage holding the floating
piston to the guide piston. If the noise continues for more than
15-20 seconds stop the compressor and call the service department.
